Parent Plus Loan

June 5, 2007

Dear U of O Parent:

We wanted to provide information to parents on how their Federal Direct Parent Plus loan is applied to the students account and how refund amounts to the parent are determined and issued.

When the Plus loan is disbursed to the students account, the Plus loan will apply first to the charges on the account, followed by other sources of financial aid the student has obtained.

In the past we have worked individually with some parents and have made exceptions to our refunding policy. Due to increased work-loads and the rising number of loan accounts we can no longer make exceptions and will be adhering to the established refunding policy.

When there is a credit balance a refund is issued first to the student if the student has sources of aid that exceed the credit balance or if the parent has designated the Plus loan refund to be released to the student. For remaining credit balances on the Plus loan a refund of that credit balance will be mailed to the parent. Refunds to the parents are not issued until after the add/drop class period, which is the 8th day of classes.

Refund Summary:

A refund will be given to the student first if:

  • The student has financial aid that exceeds the credit amount.
  • The parent has authorized the student to receive refund amounts from the Plus loan.

A refund will be given to the parent if:

  • There is a credit balance and the student has no other sources of financial aid.
  • A refund has been given to the student in the amount of their other sources of financial aid and there is a remaining credit balance.

If you have any questions regarding this policy please contact Student Billing.
