Banking and Check Cashing

Banking

Students who have no checking account should consider the advantages of opening such an account. It's a safe repository for your money, and will enable you to obtain the "check guarantee" card required by many local merchants. A money market and/or savings account might also be advisable, particularly for foreign and out-of-state students who may need to safekeep considerable sums of money for extended periods.

In shopping for a financial institution, take some time to compare their services, fee structures, and location for your best value. If you have Internet access, the Eugene Chamber of Commerce lists numerous local banks with addresses and phone numbers. U.S. Bank maintains a branch and three ATMs within one block of campus, while Wells Fargo and Bank of America both have ATMs near or on campus. Students are also eligible to join U-Lane-O Credit Union which has ATMs in the Erb Memorial Student Union and the University Bookstore.

Check Cashing

Checks for cash may be negotiated at the University Bookstore for $20 with no service charge. Further policies that apply are: one check per day, no two-party checks, and current picture UO identification.
